Smart Material Libraries From Online Material Search to In-Person Sample Review

IDEAFUSION Smart Material Libraries connect online material search with in-person sample review. Interior designers can explore fabrics, stone, wood veneer, and finishes, compare material combinations

Inside a Smart Material Library

A Smart Material Library brings physical samples from different material categories into one organized space. Interior designers and material specialists can browse fabrics, stone, wood veneer, wall finishes, decorative panels, glass, furniture finishes, and hardware without moving between separate supplier locations. Samples are classified so users can find relevant options, compare them at a worktable, and discuss how they may be used in a specific interior space.

What makes the Material Library smart is the connection between its physical samples and the online platform. This connection supports both early exploration and focused project work. An interior designer who has not selected a product can browse by color, texture, or surface effect, then review the related product information online. A team with a material schedule can locate specific categories and compare shortlisted samples. In both cases, the selection process can continue from material search and physical review to sample confirmation and supplier communication.

On-Site Sample Review and Material Pairing

Physical review helps a project team judge details that are difficult to confirm on a screen. The team can handle each sample, observe it under available light, and place it beside other materials intended for the same space.

Touch and Assess Physical Samples

Touch reveals qualities that product images cannot fully show. With fabric, an interior designer can feel the weave, thickness, softness, and direction of the pile. With stone, the interior designer can examine the grain, surface relief, edge, and finish. With wood veneer, the team can assess the grain pattern, coating, and the way the surface feels at close range. Interior designers can scan the QR code on the sample to open the sample's digital profile and review available details such as material composition, specifications, and applicable performance information.

Observe Color, Texture, and Sheen

Real color and texture can change with the viewing angle and lighting conditions. Polished stone may reflect nearby colors. Velvet or fabric with metallic yarn can appear lighter or darker when viewed from different directions. A wood finish may look warmer under one light source and cooler under another. Moving samples between daylight and the lighting available in the Material Library helps the team identify changes that may affect the intended design.

Compare Fabric, Wood Veneer, and Stone

Consider an interior designer selecting fabric for a hotel lounge. The interior designer first identifies fabrics that fit the color direction and expected use, then places them beside the proposed wood veneer and stone. A warm fabric may work with one wood tone but make another appear too red. A stone with strong veining may compete with a pronounced fabric pattern. The sheen of the stone may also feel too formal beside a matte wood finish.

The interior designer can change the samples and their visible proportions until the combination has the intended balance. For example, wood veneer may form the main background, stone may be limited to a feature surface, and fabric may provide the closest tactile layer. The team should record the sample number, brand, model, finish, and questions that still require confirmation. This preserves the relationship between the physical combination and the product information used later in the project.

The Development of the Global Material Library Network

IDEAFUSION established its first overseas Smart Material Library in Singapore in September 2024. Tokyo followed in June 2025, Hong Kong in October 2025, and London in April 2026 as the first IDEAFUSION Smart Material Library in Europe. The network also includes Material Libraries in Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. These locations give local project teams a place to review physical materials while using the wider platform for product information and supplier contact.

Each Material Library is arranged for browsing, sample handling, and side-by-side comparison. Depending on the location and current display, visitors may encounter fabrics, wall finishes, stone, glass, wood-related products, furniture finishes, and hardware. The sample mix is not necessarily identical in every city and can change over time. Visitors with a specific project should confirm the location, visiting arrangements, and relevant sample categories before arriving.

Search Online and Request Samples

Users can browse material pages, explore the available product information, and compare options based on their project requirements. Materials of interest can be shortlisted for further consideration. To request samples, click “More Information” on the relevant material page and submit an online sample request.  Try it now

Shortlist Online and Compare In Person

A project team can begin online with a defined space, palette, material category, or reference image. After creating a shortlist, the team can contact the relevant Material Library and arrange an in-person review. The visit can then focus on texture, real color, sheen, pattern scale, and the way several materials work together. If one option does not fit, the same criteria can be used to find and compare a replacement.

Discover Materials In Person and Check Details Online

An interior designer may also visit a Material Library before choosing a product direction. Browsing physical samples can reveal colors, textures, and combinations that were not part of the original search. When a suitable sample is found, the interior designer can record its brand, model, and sample code, then check the available specifications, application information, and supplier details online. The platform information and the physical sample should be used together when the team evaluates the option. Try it now

Building Material Libraries for Design Firms and Companies

IDEAFUSION can also support design firms and companies that need an internal Material Library. The service is intended for organizations that regularly review samples, need a central display area, or want a consistent place for team selection meetings. An internal Material Library can reduce the problem of samples being dispersed across project teams, storage areas, and supplier packages.

IDEAFUSION can work with your team to discuss the setup of an internal Material Library based on your needs, including the material categories to include, how samples should be organized, and how the Material Library will support your selection process.
